RESUME,

This study examines the theme of war and the role of the supernatural as reflected in Elechi amandi's the great ponds. It exposes the difficulties experienced due to war and man's decision to seek help from the supermatural f as reflected in Amadi's the great ponds. It exposes the difficulties experienced due to war and man's decision to seek help from the supermatural forces. This brings about the role that is played by the gods and the impact it has on the war and the society as a whole. This work sets out to prove the hypothectical assumption that, although the human being in Elechi Amadi's the great ponds invokes ogbunabali the god of the night (which kills by the night) to invervene in war,the latter does not side with him;he instead judges according to what is right and good.Traditionally, the gods are believed to be just and never support any action that is unjust. With use of sociological approach, this researcher bases his interpretation of the novel within the ikwerre consmological system and the relations the people entertain with the spirit world.
