Résumé,

This study sets of find out the main problems encountered in the teaching and learning of the English language especially the speaking skill in Burundi Basic schools. This study was carried out in order to find out some solution for improving the teaching and learning of the speaking skill in Burundi Basic schools. This study was conducted in Bukeye Commune where five schools were selected. Data from pupils and English teachers in 9th grade classes were collected by the use of questionnaire designed for both teachers and learners to seek for information about the main problems the pupils and English teachers are facing in the teaching and learning of the speaking skill in Burundi Basic schools. We also used classroom observation in 9th grade classes of Basic Schools concerned with this research. By this research, it was found out that the teaching and learning of the speaking skill in 9 th grade classes of Basic Schools cannot be developed because of some of the problems such as insufficient time,wrong methodology. and difficult materials which are not at the learners, level. This study reveals that materials used in teaching and learning do not allow the development of the speaking because of the low level of the pupils. It is also noticed that the time allotted to English lesson is not sufficient. As the time provided for the teaching and learning is not sufficient, teachers should organize "extra-curricular" activities such as debates, journalism and drama. Based on the materials used teachers should be creative and design lessons which should motivate pupils in the way of learning.
