RESUME

This work aimed at assessing the teaching and learning of English vocabulary at the upper level of secondary schools precisely in first form arts section,in Gitaramuka commune. It dealt with the teaching and learning of vocaburary which can lead to the understanding and use of English vocabulary in first form Arts section. The research was connducted on the basis of three hypotheses:
a)Teachers' techniques contribute to the learning of English vocabulary in arts section,b)Learners attitudes affect their understanding of English vocabulary and correct use of teaching materials provide pupils with a proper understanding of new words. Moreover, teachers ,teachers and learners' questionnaires were handed to the responndents as well as the classroom observation to collect data. The reseacher used a written questionnaire to teachers and learners and classroom observation to help him gather more data about the teaching-learning process and that teachers' techniques contribute to the findings .As a result, the reeacher found that teachers' techniques contribute to the learning of English vocabulary and that learners' attitudes can effect their understading of vocabulary. Also, the lack of materials and library is a major factor that hinders the teaching-learning of English vocabulary and stutents do not have opportunities to get more information about vocabulary. Finally, suggestions were addressed to the goverment, teachers, learners and further researchers.
