RESUME,

This study assessed the teaching and learning of the speaking skills in 9th grande classes. It aimed at finding out the difficulties encountered in the teaching and learning of the speaking skills in 9th grande classes. The instruments used during the research are classroom observation, teachers' and pupils' questionnaire. There were a sample of 126 respondents that is 120 pupils and 6 teachers. The quantitative method was used with written questionnaire as the data collection instruments. After the analysis of the data, the following findings were shown. The first hypothesis was tested and showed that inadequate methods are used. The the first hypothesis was proven right. The second hypothesis was tested and showed that the large number of the learners in the classroom does not allow the learning of the speaking skill. The Third hypothesis was tested and showed that the time allotted to English at basic school does not allow the development of the speaking skill. To conclude, recommendation for the improvement of the speaking were addressed to some relevant educational partners such as teachers, Ministry of education and learners.
