RESUME,

The current study "Assessment of the teaching and learnind of the English speaking skill in 9 th forms of some selected basic schools in Gisagara commune" seeks in 9 th forms of some selected basic schools in Gisagara commune" seeks to evaluate the teaching and learning of the English speaking skill in basic schools.To achieve this purpose,four research hypotheses were formulated:materials used do not meet the students' needs in oral communication,Ninth form teachers sped little time dealing with the speaking skill,students do not usually practise the speaking skill outside the classroom,and ninth form teachers organize easy speaking activities.The work was conducted in Cankuzo Basic shool.5 teachers and 17 students were wre investigated.To collect data,two instruments are used,namely classroom observations,teachers' questionnaire and stundent's questionnaire.The data from the survey are analysed and interpreted.At the end of the work,the findings are andicated:there is a need for supplementary materials to meet the students' needs in the speaking skill,teachers do not allot enough time to the speaking skill,students do not practise speaking English outside the classroom,and ,and the Ninth form teachers organize easy activities to develop the speaking skill.Thus,suggestions on how the speaking skill could be developed were made.
