RESUME,
The purpose of this stusy is to find out the semantic meaning of some Kirundi toponyms in Ndava commune. To carry out the research, two research questions were designed. Firstly, it was to know the relationship between a place and its semantic meaning while the second dealt with showing the linguistic analysis of word-formation of toponyms. The sample of this study was selected among the inhabitants of Ndava commune by convenience sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire and the interview. After a thorough analysis of data collected, it was found that Kirundi toponyms are not given merly for identification but mainly because they carry a given message such as to describe the place, or to show the activity done in that place. It was also found that Kirundi toponyms like proper names are created byusing word-formation process.
