A thesis submitted in partail fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degreein Licnce en Langue et Littérature Anglaises.

This work aims at examining the gender based message convoyed trough Rundi wedding songs by showing the influence of what people sing on people.Trough Rundi wedding songs, poeple assign roles to members of the family and this is done basing on gender. This assignment of roles to members of the family basing on gender affects members of the family and society both positively and negatively. We find that women are given more responsibilities than men and these roles are one of the cause for women to live a dependent life. Therefore,Rundi wedding songs as a form of Burundians aral literature help in transmitting Burundians values, norms and beliefs from generation to generation. As our study is a field study where we had to meet people and talk to them, qualitative research method has been used so as to get information from our informants. The study was carried out based on the assumption that Rundi wedding songs are gender based and reflect Burundians culture. This study therefore assumes that the gender discourse and parformativity in Rundi wedding songs teach people about marital life.Fourthermore, through wedding songs, people assign roles to both wife and husband basing on gender.
