RESUME,

The prsent work investigates the use of visual aids in teaching English vocabulary items to ninth form learners of basic education.The study was conducted in Giheta Basic schools where 9 ,ninthform classes,that is,3 schools of each of the three zones of this communes were visited.Two instruments were used: a questionnaire for both ninth form learners and teachers and classroomobservation.This research was guided by tree research hypothess which were stated as the following:1)the lack of visual aids in teaching English vacabulary affects negatively learners' understanding,2)large classes do not allow significantly an efficient use of visual aids for teaching English vocabulary,3) teachers do not take enoigh time to use visual aids to teach English vocabulary .
Informants were 45 learners and 9 teachers of nine classes .The findings show that some teachers were not trained to teach English.Some visual aids are available while others are some teachers who use available visual aids wherears others do not care about them.
Furthermore,teachers who use visual aids help their learners understand vocabulary items faster than those who do not use them.
