RESUME,

Researching on the reading skill stemmed from my strong desire to improve its teaching and learning in Burundi secondary schools. This study investigates an important area of english language teaching and learning. It examines the present situation of teaching and learning of reading skill of English, the problems students encounter during reading an English text and the learners proficiency level of reading skill when they are at the secondary level namely in 2nd form science in Burundi. It also examines reding materials used at the secondary level. The study discuses the recent development in reading pedagogy. It also presents the methods for empirical investigation in the study which include teachers' questionnaire survey, classroom observation, and the students reading test.
This study consists of 5 parts:

The first chapter, the introduction deals with the different stage the work went through from its beginning. The second chapter contains a review of some of the literature related to the reading skill evaluation. The third chapter is about methodology I used to collect and analyse data. The fourth chapter analyses the results and interprets them.
Finally, the fifth discusses the findings and formulates conclusions and recommendations. All this is done with the perspective of giving my contribution to the teaching and learnig of reading in Burundi public secondary schools namely those of Bujumbura Province. The findings show that students' present level of reading is not up to the mark, the reading pedagogy used in the country is also largely backdated.
