A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of he requirements for the award of the degree "Liczncié en Langue et Littérature Anglaises.

This research is about "Assessing the role of visual materials in the teaching and learning of in the 7th and 8th forms in public and private basic schools in Bujumbura Mayorship".The purpose was to identity the role played by the visual aids,the effectiveness ot those materials for pupils learning of the new words and the impact they have on pupils'attitude.The data were colled from the teachers and learners of these schools using questionnaire and classroom observation.At the end,the research compared the colled data and analyzed the before providing a conclusion about it.
The results of the study revealed that teachers rarely use visual materials like real objects,word flashcards,picture flashcards and charts and particularly drawings on the blachboard to teach vocabulary.On the other hand,regarding to which extent visual materials enhance vocaburaly learning,it was revealed that visual materials facilitate students' vocaburaly learning.The findings from this study showed that the use of real objectifs is time-saving.When teachers display the object in front of the pupils,,everybody sees it and do not hesitate to understand what they mean.In addition,the use of visual aids in teaching new words is really effective to the pupil'ability to master those words.As a matter of fact,results whowed that the end of the lesson,the new learned words remain in their minds for a long period of time.
Furthermore,finding evidenced that the use of visual aids creates excitement to pupils.They are motivated because they see what the teacher is talking about with their own eyes.Accordingly,it was recommanded thet teacher should use various types of visual materials that enhance student' vocabulary knowledge as much as possible since they are very important when teachers use them adequately when teaching the meaning of new words.
Hence,it is recommanded that teachers should use easily available materials in order to help the pupils in understanding the meaning of words.Further researchers should check the effectiveness of visual aids in other secondary school levels or conduct their research on their research on ther materials.
