A Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree"Licence en Langue et Littérature Anglaises"

This study investigates the influence of sosio-economic background on English language learning.It aims at evaluating how socio economic background impacts the learners and the effects it has on english language learning.Research questions are structures around three themes.The first theme is to find out how sosioeconomic background hinders or helps learners in English learning process.
The second is about the role played by parents and other educational stakeholders in supporting and motivating children.The third is about how home environment and attitudes impacts English language learners.In this prism,12 public day secondary schools having First Arts Form Section in Makamba province are randomly selected.
The findings to the first theme reveal that parents' socio-economic backround impacts negatively the performance and academic achievements of the learners in English language learning.The data to the second theme report that home environment is not conductive.To find solution to these obstacles faced by learners,Burundi goverment and education institutions should take the issue in their hands by setting up an environment which motivates learners in wish to enhance English language competence. Parents should use the little means they have to encourage their children and school staff should create free English clubs in which learners of all backgrounds should interact and discus English topics in.
