RESUME,

This study is an attempt to evaluate/ learning process of the speaking skill in Burundi 9th form basic schools. It aims at showing the lack of use of appropriate techniques and English conversation groups' efficiency when teaching/learning the speaking skill. It was conducted in three selected basic schools in North Kiremba Commune which are Gisuka basic school,Kibuye basic school and pope Paul Vi basic school of Kiremba.A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 58 9th form basic school pupils and their tree teachers, and they were asked to express their view about the value they attach to English language and the way it is taught/learned.Data were presented in tables before they were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The analysis of data revealed that most of pupils are not really motivated in a way that they can easily develop their English speaking ability.Another finding of this research is that some teachers do not make use of appropriate techniques and some others have insufficient knowledge in terms of methodological applications. As far as groups activities are concerned, findings showed that they are often neglected whereas they are efficient to develop the speaking competence. Finally this study suggests that teachers should give the important place to the speaking skill and use appropriate strategy, especially English conversation group activities, then helping and motivating learners to practice English language on its spoken aspect.
