RESUME,

This work examines the supernatural and fate in Nathael Hawthorne's "Rappaccini's Daughter" and Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" by showing their paradoxical nature. The work furtherexplores the failure of the Romantics to provide a compatible fate at the end of the stories in both characters and settings, regardless the great feature that characterizes most of their works.By failing,we mean that as they set their works on strange events, using unusual characters and uncommon settings, they were expected to present at the end of the stories an admirable fate to keep on exalting their Works. However, that is not what is found where characters and settings once supernatural in the course of the stories have after all become natural. The thesis is written within the framework of new Historicism and psychoanalytic Approaches as it crucial to place the stories under study in their historical context and also exploring the imagination of characters struggling against their limitations. This study is written based on the hypothesis that the supernatural is a strong feature in "Rappaccini's Daughter " and "The fall of House of Usher",but with an unexpected fate of characters.
