A sissertation submitted in partial Fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree "licence en langue et littérature anglaise"

This work aims at seeking to what extent the reading skill is taught and learnt in private primary schools in order to developp the reading performance in English.
This study asks some questions related to:the time spent in teaching/learning the reading skill,the taeching materials,the pupils' attitudes,the cause of failure and the suggestions of the teachers to ipmrove the reading skill teaching.In order to collect the data for this study,a questionnaire was distributed to four(4) teachers from sixth grade of Ecole Internationale,Discovery School,Ecole les Cherubins and Ecole SOS.In addition to the questionnaire,I did classroom observation in the schools cited above. The analysis of the data led to a number of conclusions.The small period alloted to the teaching/learning of the reading skill,pupils'low leel and language interference are the causes of their failure in the reading skill.Besides,the reading skill is not evaluated.
