RESUME,

This study set out to investigate how the sociolinguistic and cultural environments impact the acquisition of the English speaking skill in Burundi secondary schools.
The performance of Burundian secondary school pupils in the spoken English differs from one pupil to another and this is caused by many factors including environment parameters. Some perform better than others because they are privileged to have extra lessons after class while others are not and this can be justified by the way they work,so,this is the main concern of this study. It seeks to show how cultural environment can set barriers to the acquisition of the English speaking skill and how cultural environment can set barriers to the acquisition of the English.some questions have been set in order to try to get answers to this serious problem.
To get answers to those questions,a classroom observation was used and the pupils' and teachers' questionnaires were administered as well as the interview.
This study was carried on 76 informants,69 pupils and 7 teachers from 7 different secondary schools in Bujumbura Municipality. This study came up with results that the environment in which a learner is living impacts his/her performance in the language even though there are other factors such as lack of school material like CD,books, etc that cannot be ignored .Conclusions and Recommendations were drawn and formulated in the light of the research findings.
