"Assessment of English level in some communal Colleges in Burundi"
Learning and teaching a foreign language such as English in a non-English speaking environment like Burundi is often challenged by many factors;and this negatively affects the students' score in many schools, when compared to others .
This work intends to find out the reason why some communal College are often ranked among the last schools while others seem to do better in English tests. To achieve this ,questionnaires were designed for both teachers and students, and an achievement test were used in the present study with the sample of 22 teachers and 240 students from 22 schools concerned with the study.
After the analysis of the data,a number of factors were found to be the cause of the low level observed in some communal colleges:the class size influences the students results, the learning environment is a determinant factor in the teaching/learning process, the teachers qualification determines the stundent's competence, the long distance walked to school leads to bad results and the teacher's lack of motivation and interest lead to bad result. On the basis of that, all the educational partners should actually be involved in the improvement of the English level in all institutions in general and particularly in communal colleges.
