This work entiled "A critique of approaches and materials used in teaching the english speaking skill in Brurundi basic schools: A case study of 7th Form in Bururi and Rumonge Provinces" analyzes factors that hamper the development of oral fluency in English among learners of 7th Form of that New Education System.This study intends to answer the follong research questions that quided this research:Are Burundi Basic Schools Teachers equipped with skills?Are the teaching Approaches used to teach the English Speaking Skill appropriate? Do Teachers use adequate materials in the teaching of english Speaking Skill? To get answers to those questions, classroom observation was conducted; a written questionnaire was also administered teachers of English in 7th Form. This Study was carried out with 24 teachers of that level. Therefore,Through this Study?It was discovered that the Burundi basic school teachers are not equiped with skills that enable them to enhance the learners'performance in English Speaking Skill. The Teaching Approaches used to teach the English Speaking Skill are not appropiate.Teachers use inadequate materials in the teaching of English Speaking Skill and As a contribution to the study,some recommandations were made to different parteners involed in the educational system such as the government,teachers of basic schools,pupils of 7th Form and future reseachers.
