Résumé,
This work aims at studying the phenomenon of narcissism in the post-word war 1 American society as depicted by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. It examines the unscrupulous behaviour of the youth and its consequences. Indeed most post world war I Americans became selfish by caring only about their own interests.
The high rate of ambition which led some Americans to indulge in illicit activities hampered the achievement of the American Dream. In this regard, this work is predicated on the hypothetical contention that the excessive love for the self is the cause of many vices in society. Written against the background of psychoanalytical framework, this work concludes that decline of moral values in the 1920s led to the death of the superego and the predominance of the Id.
