RESUME

This study deals with the investigation of the problems encountered while teaching and learning English as a foreign language in Burundi primary schools, especially in Fifth and Sixth Grades. The main concern of this study is to find out problems that hinder the teaching and learning of English language in Burundi public primary schools and propose solutions for them. This study was carried out in 12 schools and propose solutions for them. This study was carried out in 12 schools located in Musigati commune where 1012 respondents were used ; that is, 20 teachers of English and 992 pupils. The data used in this study were collected using writen questionnaire to teachers, interview with the pupils and classroom observation. After the analysis and interpretation of data from the three tools, the researcher came out with findings. As a result, it has been observed that both teachers and pupils were facing the difficulties in teaching and learning English at elementary school level. Most of the teachers faced problems while developing the different abilities of pupils. It was also found out that the major problems that teachers and learners of primary schools encounter while teaching and learning that foreign language are that, teachers of primary schools are not welle skilled to teach English and the lack of sufficient materials. Despite the findings, it was conducted that the government's policy of teaching English in primary school should go on. It is then, in this lifht that a number of recommendations were made at the end of this study in the store for people who take part in the educational system in our country.
