RESUME

Our work entitled "Problems encountered by day-school learners in developing oral fluency in English : A case study of 4th form classes in selected secondary schools of Bujumbura municipality" aims at identifying the hindrances that block the English fluency of the 4th form learners. Furthermore, it deeply analyses the obstacles met by both students and teachers during the speaking practice lessons. In Burundian Educational system, English is taught by means of four different skills namely Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking as well. The researcher opted to work on the oral fluency, which is concerned with the Speaking skill. To carry out this work, the researcher used questionnaires addressed to both students and teachers form six selected schools in Bujumbura Municipality. The researcher also used classroom observation to get new and reliable information. This study came up with findings. Teachers allocate enough time to Writing and Reading whereas Listening and Speaking skills are less emphasized on for the reason that they are not concerned by the 4th Form National Test. There is also a lack of adequate and sufficient materials. The researcher found that the learners' community does not provide an appropriate environment to improving their English fluency. They also stated that written tests dominate speaking within evaluation. Finally, the study came up with some recommendations so that teachers would help their students improve their fluency in spoken English.
