Résumé,

This study sets out to investigate how Kirund and French hamper the learning and mastery of the English language in junior level students in the English-Kirundi Department at the University of Burundi. The following questions guided this study : Does Burundi linguistic environment favor or hinder the learning and mastery of English ? Do Kirundi and French impact on the learning and mastery of English ? To get answers to these questions, the observation of the target population in natural environment and a student's questionnaire were used on a sample of 72 students of the junior level of the English-Kirundi Department at the Institute of Applied Pedagogy. The sudy revealed that in Burundi linguistic environment, the official status of Kirundi and French block the development of the English language in the students at that level.
