This study sets out to find out to the problems that are met by the learners of English in secondary day schools in general and by the English learners of Arts section in particular, during the learning/teaching process. The study was conducted in Bururi province. Seven day schools were selected and at each school one class was selected. Data from the English learners and the English teachers of Arts form were selected by the use of questionnaires designed to seek for the information about the problems encountered in learning English as a second language. We also used classroom observation to see the reality in those areas of research. Through this research, it was found out that the lack of teaching materials and aids, insufficient qualified teachers, the negative attitudes of the learners towards English language and the insufficiency of the time given to English lessons are the major problems that the secondary day schools learners meet, most of the time. A general conclusion and some recommendations were drawn and formulated by the researcher.
