RESUME

This work entited : "An Assessment of the Performance of Orphans and Non-Orphans in English Learning. A Case study of the Lawer Level at SOS Secondary school in Bujumbura city" intends to find out if there are differences in how orphaned and non-orphaned learners perform in English. It was conducted at SOS HG High School of Bujumbura in 4th forms A and B. The following hypotheses were used as assumptions in this study : Orphanhood does not influence the learner's achievement in English and the Personality factor influences success of both orphan and non-orphan learners in the English language. In this study, three research instruments were used namely classroom observation, learners' and teacher's questionnaires and the three consecutive annual scores. After the analysis of the collected data, it was realize that orphanhood does not handicap the learner's achievement. The little differences I found between their performances are due to other factors apart from orphanhood.
