Résumé,
English is taught in Burundi as a foreign language. Undoubtedly, the language was introduced because there is a need for Burundi to communicate with its neighbouring countries, in the East African Community and the rest of the world. In thi perspective, the country has decided to introduce English in all the primary schools. Hence, the main of this research is to assess the contribution of the English programme (i;e Scientific Topics textbook) used in the teaching of English to primary school teachers in selected pedagogical sections of Burundi secondary schools. The study was carried out in five schools located in Bururi Province and Bujumbura Municipality where 146 subjects were used as the research population.
The data used in the study were collected using a written questionnaire and classroom observations. After the analysis and interpretation of data from the two tools, the researcher pointed out finfings.
It was the found out that the textbook constitutes a handicap in the teaching / learning process and also that the training of those student-teachers undergo does not enable them to teach English well.
In this persective, a number of recommendations were formulated towards the educational stakeholders in our country.
