Résumé,

The present work aims to deal with a socio-pragmatic analysis of the jargon used by senior students at the University of Burundi while "initiating" freshmen.

The researcher aims to show the social function of the senior students' jargon, the purpose of its creation, the relationship between its creation and the student's social condition, and its perception by the outside world that is any society outside the five campuses of the University of Burundi where the research was carried out. Most senior students and freshmen were given questionnaires but the focus was on senior students in ordrer to find words and expression used in various domains that were not understood by outsiders.The researcher, who was subjected to the freshmen initiation during the academic year 2006 - 2007, became an attentive observer of what was done to new comers in the first year from the academic year 2007 - 2008. He therefore questioned the raison-d'être of this event of new comer "initiation" know as "Kunyuzura" or "urwinjizo" in Kirundi, "bizutage" in french ragging" or "hazing" in English.

He was especially interested in the language used during this "initiation". But more, the researcher wanted to know more about this phenomenon so that he provides a guide for future researchers in the area of students jargon.
