RESUME

This work aims at showing the class conflict in Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Devil on the Cross. On the one ha d it exposes the class of the masses salfering under the weight of powerty and on the other hand, the rich oppressors, living in affluence at the detriment of the majority poor. Our work tries to show through Devil on the Cross how the author exposes the plight of the peasants and worken in the present day-political set up in Kenya in consonance with the belief of the author that Kenyans should address themselves to the crisis or conflict between the emergent Kenyan bourgeoisie and the Kenyan masses. This work is produced against the background of Marxist approach to awaken and enlinghten the reader's mind to understand the necessity for change, so that the oppressed and the oppressors can come to a common ground where Africa would be seen as an open society in which there is dignity and its riches are equally shared. Based on the enlightened writer's opinions, this work seeks to prove the hypothesis that oppression most of the time leaks to frustration and finally results in revolt.
