RESUME

This work sets out to examine the leadership crisis, its consequences and political victimization of post-independant Nigerian leaders in Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah. It intends to examine the conflict that characterises post-independent leaders in the novel : those ready to serve the masses and others who want to only sere themselves. Our work goes on to expose the crisis that ensues from this leadership crisis and related consequences. From this perspective, our study is based on the hypothetical thrust that the leadership crisis in Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah brings about political victimization which obliges the oppressed masses to fight ageinst the oppressive regime. Written against the background of the New Historicism approach, this work is situated in the post-colonial Nigerian society caught in socio-political mess in which a few live in affluence while the majority languish in abject misery. Our work sets to reveal that group consciousness and communal effort are key elements in the resisting and revolutionary movement and that an effective leadership with a responsible management of power can go a long way to enshrine a bealthy and successful society. This work intends to advocate for men and women who play a pivotal role in the new social and bistorical context of post-colonial period. They should be equally treated because they contribute to bring about change of a nation in its different sectors. Noting that African leaders should stop their selfishness and lip-services, the countrymen should be politically aware so as to avoid passiveness because if passiveness is transformed into awareness, inaction is transformed into action. The materialistic, nepotism and undemocratic attitudes of contemporary African leaders is the source of failure of independence ; but the common interest for the countrymen should be the priority for all leaders.
