A survey of the methods and techniques used in the teaching of english grammar in 2nd form arts in selectedsecondary schools of Cankuzo Province

Nowadays, English is more and more getting a high instrumental value in Burundi and its standard use is highly increasing. The researcher, in this study, aimed to establishing whether the methods and techniques used in teaching Grammar in Cankuzo selected 2nd Form Arts are appropriate or not. On the basis of teaching methods and techniques and the teachers who une them the researcher has put close emphasize ont three null hypotheses were put forwards.

These later are :

Teachers of English in 2nd Form Arts in selected secondary schools in Cankuzo province do not employ appropriate teaching methods and techniques in teaching grammar. The second is : Appropriate teaching methods and techniques used in teaching grammar in 2nd Form Arts do not depend on teachers' experience and the last is : Appropriate teaching methods and techniques used in teaching grammar in 2nd Form Arts do not depend on teacher' qualification.

Appropriate teaching methods and techniques used in teaching grammar in 2nd Forms Arts do not depend on teachers' qualification. Afterwards, a questionnaire was distributed and lesson observations were used. Data collected were analyzed in the light of findings such as Grammar taught in 2nd Form Arts in selected secondary schools in Cankuzo province is still structure-based and explicit to a large extent. In the 2nd Forms Arts classes in the selected secondary schools in Cankuzo Province, teaching experience does not significantly influence the choice of methods and techniques for teaching grammar. Teachers' qualification does significantly influence the choice of methods and techniques for teaching grammar in Second Forms Arts in selected secondary schools in Cankuzo Privince.
Most of the English language teachers in the research area adopt the methods of their colleagues despite their own qualifications and experience.
This may be caused by the contagion example and other limitations hindering the teaching learning process of English language in our research area.
