Résume,

The aim of this study "Extensive rading as a key to a successful learning of the English language. The case of upper level classes in some seleced secondary schools in Kayanza province" concern to investigate whetjer or not extensive reading has an impact on students performance in English. In our study, we were guided by a number of questons tha were answered along our. research.

1. Are students in secondary schools in Kayanza province reading extensively in English?

2. Are students in secondary schools in Kayanza province exposed to sufficient and relevant reading materials?

3. Is there any relationship between students' extensive reading and the mastery of the English language?

To find answers to these questions, the students, questionnaire was administered. A sample comprising a number of subjects from First Form Art was randomly selected from the population of students in Kayanza province.

The teachers' questionnaire was also designed to find out how extensive reading contributes to the English performance.

Discussion, conclusion and resommendations were drawn and formulated in the light of the research findings.
