RESUME

This study seeks to find out the causes of the failure to learn and acquire effectively the English Language in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Burundi. To carry out the reserch, three research questions were designed. The first was to know whether most students of the D.E.L.L. are handly able to communicate in English, the second focused on what should, the latter do to improve their linguistic performance and acquire the Englsh Language effectively, while the last was to know if the curriculum was welle designed to reach the goals of effective English teaching in the Department.
After a through analysis of the data collected, it was found out that the majority of the beneficiaires of the D.E.L.L. who neglect language practice for acquisition to take place are monitor overusers. Secondly, it was found out that the minority of the students who do not rely on the conscious kowledge gotten from the classroom linguistic setting, but practice much the language in and out of the classroom, stand as monitor optimal users. Lastly, it was found out that though not a major factor, the curriculum designed for the students contributes to the failure that is observed in the Department.
