RESUME

This work has investigated how the four language skills are taught and learned in First Arts section through Today's English-Classe de première. Indeed, 131 respondents namely 121 learners and 10 English teachers of selected schools in Muramvya and Kayanza Provinces were investigated. The data were collected by means of two instruments, the classroom observation and the questionnaires for both the learners and the teachers of First Arts section.

The study has found out that all the four skills are not well tackled and, as a consequence, learners perform poorly in English, therefore, the researcher has suggested some strategies to be adopted to improve the teaching of all the four language skills. However, the strategies herein should not be slavishly followed by English teachers. Instead, the latter should adapt their classroom environment taking into account different variables, such as the size of the class, the psychological mood of the learners and so forth, highlighted in this work. The latter will help and inspire teachers to promote all the four language skills in their teaching/learning process, not only in Arts section, but also in other sections of the educational system of Burundi. At the end, a general conclusion has been drawn and recommendations to the key partners in education have been formulated in that perspective.
