RESUME

Class size has become a problem for teaching in Burundi High Schools. The study attempted to investigate the effects of class size on teaching English in Secondary Schools. It was conducted in Bjumbura city on the schools that have art section. The informants were teachers form third form art section of the schools concerned. The main concern of this research was to find out whether class size has an influence on the choice of teaching methods and on the use of teaching materials by teachers, but also if class size influences the daily assessment in class. The data were collected through a questionnaire to teachiners and classroom observation.

The results show that class size has an influence on teaching methods because methods of teaching used in small are different from those used in large class.
The results also showed that the lack of sufficient instructional materials in small/large classes is a major factor that hampered the process of teaching in secondary schools. It was also revealed that class size strongly influences the professional duties. The researcher suggests a set of recommendations that all concerned partnes should do to solve the problem of class size in Burundian's secondary schools.
