This work examines the theme of masculinity and emasculation in CHinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Flora Nwapa's Efuru. Within this profile, we show how the portrayal of gender varies according to the author and the historical contexts. In the course of this study, we tried to find out how the qualities of masculinity and emasculation are captured differently by male and female writers within the same society. The study strives to incite men and women to search for a sense of understanding to maintain a cohesive and progressive community. Written ageinst the background of New Historicism, this work concludes that a man is presented strong or weak depending on how he defines himself in society ; that the question of masculinity and emasculation in the Ibo society is not dictated by sex but by gender.
