This research study is about analyzing factore that hamper learners' good performance in reading. In fact, the study was conducted in Ryansoro and Gishubi communes, 3 First Form Arts schools were selected. The study was motivated by the fact that most of the students at the senior stage of secondary schools still have a number of problems in reading.

This study intended to test a number of hypotheses that were formulated for my research. To find out answers to the stated questions, classroom observation was used on the one hand. This aimed at getting first-hand and reliable information, as teachers and pupils coul not tell me all about themselves.

On the other hand, two questionnaires were addressed to both teachers and pupils of First Form Arts classes. The purpose was to find out those factors teachers and learners were facing and how the teachers were improvising to overcome them. By the end of my research, the findings revealed that teachers and learners face many problems while teaching and learning the reading skill and these include lack of instructional materials, large classes, students' poor linguistic competence, etc.

All in all, it is suggested that teachers and learners, by being aware of the stated factors, may improve the reading skill. In the end, a general conclusion and some recommendations were drawn and formulated by the researcher.
