In all the member countries of the East African Community (EAC), escept for Burundi, English occupies a major position in their respective education systems. In Burundi it comes in the third position after Kirundi and French. Considering that in Burundi Technical Schools English is given a little importance, consequently, graduates are not proficient in the English language. It was worthwhile to make a research on the hindrances related to the teaching and learning of English in technical schools and thereafter make suggestions to foster the English language teaching and learning in technical schools.

This study aims to promote the teaching and learning of the English language in Burundi technical schools. To attain this aim, the study tries to provide answers to the questions related to :

- The extent to which the lack of teaching / learning materials coupled with the large classes is an obstacle to the teaching and learning of English in technical schools.
- Whether teachers at technical schools cover or not the English program.
- If there are or not any psychological barriers on the learners' part that constitute a handicap to the teaching and learning of English in technical schools.

The findings reveal that in technical schools there is a number of hindrances to the teaching and learning of English namely the lack of teaching/learning materials, large classes, non coverage of the English program, etc. Strategies to coe with them have been provided.
