Apraisal of the teaching and learning of english in Burundi public primary schools

The aim of this work is to appraise the teaching and learning of English in Burundi public primary schools. the staple concern of this study is to find out problems that lie in the field of teaching English in public primary schools and then suggest solutions which can strengthen the teaching and learning of English in the well-targeted field.

The present study was carried out with 110 informants, that is, 100 pupils and 10 teachers of the selected public primary schools in Bujumbura city. This work is subdivided into five chapters.

The first chapter is the general introduction which aims to reflect the background to the study showing how English plays a key role in the world scale in general and especially in East African community in which this country is a member. In the same scope, this work aims to evaluate how English is the taught and learnt in public primary schools as it is recently introduced in public primary schools' curriculum.

The second chapter concerns the literature review which presents the related literature dealing mainly with two aspects; The first aspect emphasizes on the teaching whereas the second one deals with the learning and the factors affecting the pupils' proficiency.

The third chapter is the methodology used with regard to the selection of the researcher's informants, the sampling method and the description of the procedures of analysis of the data collected.

The last but one chapter deals with the data presentation, analysis and the interpretation of the findings. Here special attention concerns how the data were presented, analysed and interpreted from the classroom observation to the administration of the questionnaire.

The researcher found that a lot of thing have to be done in the field of teaching and learning English in Burundi public primary schools. From the finding, the primary teachers' degree of competence, the lack of sufficient teachings, the primary teachers' degree of competence, the lack of sufficient teaching materials, the class control, the insufficient evaluation and the environment stand in the way of the efficiency in the field understudy.

Finally the fifth chapter comes to conclude this work and the researcher took advantage of the opportunity to give some recommendations which would be useful to both primary English teachers and pupils.
