This study of Reading and writing skills, two sides of the same coin in junior level classes of secondary schools, tried to establish the methods and materials used both by teachers, as well as learners in English reading and writing skills. This study comprises five main chapters :

The first chapter is a general introduction, which examined the background information, statement of the problems and motivation, purpose and significance of the study, reserch questions and hypotheses scope and delimitation of the study.

The second chapter consists of literature review. It deals with the literature of other works which have been written in the area of teaching and learning reading and writing skills.

The third chapter is about the methodology of the work. Two types of questionnaires are available, that is, teachers, as wells as learners' questionnaires. Classroom observations are also used during the research.

The fourth chapter analyses the data collected and interprets the findings of the study.

Finally, the last chapter deals with the conclusion of the whole study and brings out recommendations directed to the Ministry of Education. English Department staff of the BEPES, teachers, learners, as well as future researchers. All this was done with the intent of finding solutions to problems in relations to methods and materials used in the teaching and learning of the reading and writing skills in Burundian secondary schools particularly in fourth form.
