A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree " Licence en Langue et Littérature Anglaises"

This work examines the way Burundians address each other in a face-to- face interaction, with age and social status of the participants as factors, Indeed, languages, like other forms of social activity has to be appropriate to the speaker using it; and all societies, everywhere in the world, have rules about the way in which language should be used in social interaction. On this note, this study does not only expose words or expressions used by the participants, but also shows some forms of address, words or expressions to avoid for different reasons. This study concludes that speaking a language is one thing, and knowing how to convey a message is another. This work, in its recommendations, invites people to be careful about how and what to say and avoid words and expressions that are considered as "dirty", especially by taking into considération the hearers as far as the Kirundi language is concerned.
