A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the Degree: " Licence en Langues et littérature Anglaises"

The present work aims at dealing with the sociolinguistic study of the words and expressions of prisoners of the central jail of Gitega province. It shows how prisoners' language is unintelligible to outsiders. Also it is structured under semantic code only understandable by inmates for their strategic purpose. The research questions :

a) Is the language used by prisoners composed of words and expressions that are understandable only by them ?

b) Why do the prisoners use this jargon ?

c) What are the domaine of life from which the prisoners draw their jargon ?

The interview and the observation are the major instruments that have been used to collect the data. The major findings proved the existence of a jargon in Gitega Central jail. The words and expressions used in their a jargon are unintelligible for whoever is not a prisoner of this jail. The meaning is connotational rather than denotational. There is a need for other researchers to do research in this field since words and expressions are created as the time progress.
