The present work is concerned with the use of drawing materials in the teaching and learning of English vocabulary to promote the speaking skill. It aims at discovering difficulties encountered by primary school first year English teachers in the use of drawings on the one hand and the impact of the lack of those drawings on both teachers and pupils on the other hand.

Moreover, through visits done in both public and private primary schools in rural and urban areas of Gitega commune, it is obviously observed that most of primary school first year English teachers use drawings or pictures.

However, they do not use them in a similar way. These different uses of drawings are due, first, to their availability and the place where the school is located.
Second, some primary schools do not have enough school materials except pupils' books.

Thus, after analysing the results got in those primary school first years in Gitega commune, some recommendations have been directed to those who are concerned with education. English teachers are asked to create other techniques to adopt where there are not enough drawing materials. The government should improve the programme and provide enough English teaching materials in both public and private primary schools in order to facilitate teachers' activities.
