This study examines the image that Ngugi wa Thiong'o paints of the colonial prison through his literary works. It shows the portrayal of prison through the analysis of his two novels ; Weep Not, Child and A Grain of wheat.

Our work examines the tense relations that exist between the Kenyans and the colonialists. It exposes the exploitative and oppressive mechanism put in place by the colonialists and the resistance put up by the victims. This study is therefore based on the hypothesis that prison is an i nstrument which is used to rob Kenyans' freedom and land. It further seeks to prove that detention is not the end of a revolutionary fight. In spite of their incarceration, the detainees become more united to fight for theri freedom. It seeks to know the forms, the power and the weakness of the colonial detention ; and the extent to which it is able to hamper revolution.

It aims at proving that the prison experience is a way to freedom. Through this analysis we came up to the idea that prison cannot succeed in hampering revolution. This work recommends that prison should not be used as an oppressive tool. It should be used as a means of production.

The theoretical approach used in this analysis is New Historicism which deals with the contemporary production and reception of literary texts.
