A tesis submetted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degrée : "Licence en Langue et Littérature anglaise".
This work aims at examining love and its consequences in william shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The work analyses the reasons behind the tragic denouement in the play. Through the use of new historicism and psychoanalytic approaches, the study explores love and fate by establishing relationship betxeen Elizabethan society and the characters depicted in Romeo and Juliet, as well as influence of the time on the authorship of William Shakespeare so as todrw limitations of the social standards of morality and propriety. It also explores the motives that push the parents toforce teir sons and daughters tomarry according to their wish that gives birth to confines in which on is seemingly obliged to stay. this work is based onn the hypthesis that love hardly succeeds in a vicious and selfish sociéty. In the findings, this work points out that requires a favourable environment to last : parents need to be in good terms and favorable in terms of freedom of spouse choice. To sum up, this study analyses the consequences of boundless love on both the lovers and the parents.
