Abstract :
This work examines the impact that traditional beliefs exerts on the process of change as captured in Bediako Asare's Rebel. It traces the conflict between some of the traditional ways of living and change. Set in post colonial period, it demonstrates haw difficult and confusing it is to initiate new ideas in a traditional setting where most of the peaple do not easily accept to alter the way they used to live. It futher aims at showing to what extent those beliefs can stand as a barrier to change.
This study is, therefore, based on the hypothesis that strong attachment to tradition can impede progress. It tries to show writers, like Bediako Asare, Challenge some elements of tradition that prevent the society from progressing. Employing the New Historicism approach, this work grapples with the evolution of a man in a society that contradicts his vision
