A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degeree"Licence en langue et littérature anglaises"

The present work deals with the appraisal of the effectiveness of peer activities in speaking foreign languages : case of English majors at the Univesity of Burundi. It firstly investigates and analyses the importance of peer activities in the improvement of the speaking skill. It also assesses the exstence of peer activities at the University of Burundi in the English Language and literature Department as far as the speaking skill is concerned.

In my study, I was guided by two questions that were answered all along my research :
1. Are peer activities indispensable to English Majors at the University of Burundi in the improvement of the speaking skill?
2. Are peer activities frequently observed in the English language and Literature Department at the University of Burundi as far as the speaking skill is concerned?

To find answers to those questions, Oral expression teachers and students from second to fourth year were distributed a questionnaire using a simple random sampling technique for students.

The students and Oral Expression teachers, answers made me to conclude that peer activities are an effective technique to improve the speaking skill. Unfortunately, they are not frequently observed at the University of Burundi because of class sizes, the insufficient time allotted to the Oral Expression course, and the lack of English speaking community. I ended this work by formulating some recommendations in the light of the research findings.
