This work examines the theme of materialism and greed in Jane Austen's Emma and Mongo Beti's Perpetua and the Habit of Unhappiness. It stresses on the realism of character portrayal in both novels. This work proceeds to examine the questions of love, friendship and marriage in both texts and how they are conditioneds. In view of this work operates on the premise that materialism is a hindrance to successful friendship, love and marriage. Written against the backdrop of the Marxist and psychoanalytic approaches, this work concludes that frendship, love and marriage conditioned by wealth and mercenary acts are always short-lived and less reliable.
