Résumé

This work examines the physical decay and mora decadence highlighted by Armah in The Beautyful Ones Are Not yet Born. It attempts to analyse both the physical environment and atmosphere, characterizid by physical filth, dirt, rotteness surrounding the people and the moral or spiritual decay which result from bribery, moral corruption, political hypocrisy and the quest for material things.

This work focuses on the squalor caused by the inability of the Ghanaian society as a whole, to maintain physical cleanlness trough a proper disposal of refuse and the failure of the elite who lead it, to operate a modern state efficiently.
Our study is based on the hypothetical contention that Armah presents to us, a physically and morally decaying Ghanaian society caused by the pursuit or quest for material things. Written against the backdrop of marxist theory and post-colonial theory, this work tends to focus on the relations between the different classes in society-how the lower or working class is oppressed by the bourgeoisie. It also analyses the forms and practices in the former colonies that are rooted in the relationship between colonies and their former masters.
