RESUME,<br/><br/>This study aims to assess the language use into classroom and beyond-classroom, especially in the English speaking skill. This study was based on the hypotheses that first, the mother-tongue has a negative impact on the English language proficiency. Second, it was assumed that a language which is learnt in an environment where it is not spoken is not well mastered by learners. This study was condicted in second year language section in Ngozi post Basic schools. It covered five out of the nine commune of Ngozi province. One school ws selected in a commune, making a total of five schools in five communes. I all the schools, 145 learners and 5 teachers participated in the research. In the data collection process, two questionnaires were distributed; one to learners and another to teachers. Findings revealed that the learners most of the time prefer to communicate in their mother tongue while at school or at home. Therefore, the first hypothesis was proven right. Also, it was proven right that the learners do not find people to commuicate with using English in their neighbourhood. This shows that the second hypothesis is also confirmed right. At the end, it was suggested to all the partners concerned that English clubs should be creted at schools to facilitate Learners find time to pracise the speaking skill. To school authorities, it was advised that they should set strategies facilitating to communicate in English during frree times. The study ended by giving recommendations to teachers, government and future researchers to impove the English language. |
