Résume,<br/><br/>This study aims at surveying the contribution of English clubs to the development of English performance in Burundi secondary schools, particularly in Mwaro province. The researcher focused on the discrepancy between the activities organized by English clubs and those in secondary schools' curricula. Three research hypotheses guided this work : First, educational stakeholders are not much involved in the functioning of English clubs in the schools of Mwaro province, second, the pupils the schools of Mwaro province are not motivated to join massively English clubs : and third, English clubs play a significant role in the English performance of pupils in he schools of Mwaro province. This research was conducted in 10 secondary schools of Mwaro province where 80 pupils of the 4th Form, 10 teachers and 10 club leaders sampled randomly to answer the questionnaire. Indeed, classroom and club observation helped the researcher to collect the data to this study. The findings of the study indicated that activities such as oral presentations, grup discussions, short talks and free writing which are rarely observed in the classroom curricula were organized by English clubs and facilitated the learners to enhance their English language performance. Throughout this study, surveyed teachers also revealed that pupils who were English club members speak English without fear and shame, clubs help them improve and enrich their vocabulary, Facilitate their learning since they feel free when they express themselves in English, they help them make new friends who motivate them to learn English. This work ends with some recommendations formulated towards various stakeholders in English language learning at secondary school in Burundi, particulary in Mwaro province. |
