Résumé,<br/><br/>The study aimed at analyzing problems that hamper the successful teaching and learning of the English language in Communal Secondary Schools.The study was conducted in Rumonge Commune. I investigated on the role of teaching materials and other supportive resources to supplement the teachers' effort when teaching English, class size and students' attitudes towards English. Data were collected by means of questionnaires designed to seek information about materials availability and suitability, class size and student's attitude towards the English language. Three research questions were formulated to guide this study. Through this research, it was found out that the teaching and learning of English to the required proficiency level was not being achieved, because of the lack of teaching materials, aids and an environment that can help leaners to perform in English rather than classroom. To begin with the availability of teaching and other supportive materials such as : books, tapes recorders, cassette and radio; it was found to be the main problem faced by the English teachers and leaners in communal secondary schools. If we look at the availability of materials, we notice that either teachers or students said that they do not have sufficient books or other teaching aids. Moreover, from the answers of the respondent that is teachers and students to the questions, it was found that class size do not cause any problem in the schools investigated, however the lack of an environment that can help leaners to perform in English rather than classroom was also found to be the serious problem faced the four communal secondary schools investigated. I recommended that the partners concerned with education should avail to teachers and schools the required materials for use in teaching and learning. Teachers should endeavor to develop the students' positive attitude towards English language |
