RESUME,<br/><br/>English teaching and learning is a process which demands different factors to be successful. The school environment is a combination of different factors which may influence positively or negatively this process. Taking into account the importance of English language and how any learner and teacher would like to be successful in it; this study aims at finding out and identifying the school environment factors that affect the E,glish teaching and learning process. This study is conducted on the assumption that: school's low income affectsa low effectiveness of the English language teaching and learning; pare,ts'low level of education affects negatively pupils' English performance; and schols' negative culture and beliefs about language learning affect both the English language teaching effectiveness and pupils' English oral performance in a negative way. Moreover, this study is conducted at selected post basic schools in Rumonge commune. Selected first form language pupils and their teachers are population. To collect data needed, questionnaires and class observation are used. It has been found that some schools are located in places where there are no social facilities which can generate income for both people around and the school itself. As a consequence, these schools attract less qualified and experienced teachers and lack teaching materials. This situation affects negatively the English language teaching and learning. Also some parents have a low level of education and thus cannot folow their children and supply them with all necessary materials. thisaffects negatively pupils' English performance. Last it has been found that some schools' culture and beliefs about language learning are negative. This hampers the English language teaching effectiveness and pupils' English oral performance. The result of this study makes people aware of the school environment factors that affect English teaching and learning process. From this reult, any actor of this process reacts consequently to improve how this language is taught and learnt. All in all, given that this study deals with important issues which bring important results for the nation in general and students, parents, teachers, govenment in particular, it is expected that readers will find it valuable. |
